Xaltered is a ministry which reaches out to homeless and disaffected young adults (16–25 yrs) based in hostels and sheltered accommodation in and around Bradford. The residents come from various backgrounds; orphans, council care, abusive or dysfunctional families, behaviour problems etc. Some have backgrounds that are so appalling it brings even the strong to tears. Some are overwhelmed by the conflicting emotions of love and hate caused by major dysfunctions or abuse within their families. Some are simply lonely and feel they have no one to turn to in what to them seems a cruel and indifferent world. Xaltered aims to build long term relationships with these young people based on trust, friendship and love. One of the greatest ways this is expressed is by consistently and non-judgementally “being there”. Many of these young people have been let down by pretty much everybody and everything they have ever known. Xaltered is all-inclusive. It is about releasing potential and influencing individuals to make better choices in life and to go for their dreams. Following research back in 2002 we discovered that the biggest need by far was training in basic life skills i.e. cookery, managing money, cleaning, communication, social skills and also various awareness issues such as health, diet, the Law, drugs etc. We discovered a desperate need for hope, inclusion and an anchor of real consistency in their lives. Our team was determined to make a difference. Xaltered currently runs a variety of programmes designed to introduce a wide range of life-skills including communications, both social and domestic. Building consistent relationships takes a lot of time, effort and faith. Our team members are all volunteers, from all walks of life and of all ages. Some have relevant professional qualifications some not. Together we are able to make a difference and offer hope for the future to the homeless young people of Bradford and demonstrate a kind of love that they may never have experienced. |
